Art Holidays Trujillo Spain
What’s special about the townscape Spanish art holidays?
Our townscape painting and sketching holidays take place in Trujillo Spain, a picturesque walled town surrounded by unspoilt countryside. Trujillo is an Artists paradise with beautifully preserved historical architecture and a wide range of subjects which capture the imagination.
The sketching and painting course will provide an inspiring Spanish holiday with the chance to learn and socialise as well as the unique opportunity of staying in a magnificent historical Palacio.
The venue for the week is the very special Palacio de Piedras Albas, one of Trujillo's most beautiful 16th century buildings with a stunning portico overlooking the vibrant main square. The Palacio is a private house with beautifully preserved historical features, offering guests the unique opportunity to stay in an exclusive historic Extremadura villa.
The Art Tutor
We are excited to work with our wonderful and experienced art tutor Noëlle, who has designed a course suitable for all levels of experience. You don’t need to be an expert, our Spanish art holidays are for everyone!
Noëlle studied Fine Art at St Martin's School of Art, London 1978-82 and has taught art professionally since 1987. Noëlle paints in oil, acrylic and watercolour as well as making artist's books. Noëlle has exhibited her paintings and books widely since 1983. Noëlle can teach media including: acrylic, watercolour, oil paint and pastel. Our townscape art holidays in Trujillo Spain are taught in English. Please enquire for more details. Full biography and testimonials on request.
Making Art in Trujillo, Spain
Noëlle will individually teach observational skills for beginners, whilst developing skills and direction for the more experienced.
The spectacular portico and peaceful gardens at the Palacio provide a magical landscape for the course, ideally suited for making art. Guests can choose whether to paint in Trujillo directly from observation, or sketch as a starting point for making paintings in the studio that are an imaginative response to the subject. Possible painting and sketching subjects include: the magnificent main square, grand and intimate architecture, churches, atmospheric lanes lined with secret gardens, wild romantic landscapes or the beautiful interior of the Palacio itself.
Creative exercises will help free the imagination and encourage a different way of looking at the sketching subject, as well as being fun. Tuition for all levels will include:
- How to find interesting compositions alongside simplification of subject.
- Handling of materials alongside markmaking, colour and tone.
- How to develop your paintings and sketches away from the subject.
Please enquire for more details.
We come together for meals on the remarkable Florentine portico overlooking the main square in Trujillo or in the formal dining room. There's no better spot to relax and have lunch whilst taking in the wondrous architecture or perhaps just to watch the world go by! Afternoons are spent at leisure, enjoying perfect peace and quiet in the gardens, exploring or relaxing by the lovely swimming pool.
Seeing the area
The art trip itself is an adventure, but no Spanish art holiday is complete without tasting the historical culture of Extremadura itself. Guests will be taken on a guided tour of Trujillo and Caceres with expert direction. Experience panoramic landscapes and stroll down traditional Spanish lanes that wind through the historic town with secret gardens, jasmine and orange trees glimpsed over high stone walls. Enjoy Conquistador palacios with exquisite facades and beautiful interiors and sublime churches endowed with impressive works of art. Sip wine on the open air terraces in the main square, whilst you watch the sun go down and the ancient buildings glow. Unforgettable!
Art students can also enjoy a guided trip to Extremadura's medieval town of Caceres included in the week. We visit two very different art galleries, both in magnificent old buildings. There will also be an opportunity to paint and sketch in the old town before and after a relaxing tapas lunch on the Plaza Mayor.
What Guests Say
"I stayed at the Palacio in Trujillo, in the centre of an historic and picturesque town ~ in itself a wonderful experience. I found it challenging but very rewarding, and anything I achieved was down to Noëlle's approach and patience." Anthony Brundle, Australia
"I had a wonderful time during my painting and drawing holiday in Trujillo, Spain. The Palacio de Piedras Albas is beautiful as is the town of Trujillo. Both gems! The food was delicious and my time with my instructor Noëlle, was quite special." Mary K. VanGieson, US.
"My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our week with Noëlle in Trujillo. First and foremost, the art course was well structured and challenging enough to get us working and thinking. Noëlle was keen to stress that nothing was mandatory, so it would have been possible to spend a very pleasant week sitting in the sun and doing the odd sketch; but it was well worth sticking to the programme. Secondly, the group were all great fun, we had some interesting discussions over our many drinks and meals. A memorable experience." John Kelly, UK
"The course more than lived up to expectations. It was clear that it would from the very first activity an exercise that required us to look, and look and look again! And so it continued. During the course of the week Noëlle also encouraged us, in the quiet of the afternoon when working at our chosen spot to consciously connect with the environment by summoning all our senses. " Catherine Castro, UK
