Food & Gastronomy
Extremadura’s million hectares of dehesa, its extensive plantations of holm and cork oak trees, are the source of its most prestigious product - hams and sausages from the iberico pigs which are fattened on acorns over the winter months.
The Extremadura dehesa also supplies magnificent extremeño cheeses like the famous sheep’s milk Torta del Casar, Torta de la Serena and the goat’s cheeses from Los Ibores.
Pimentón de la Vera, the smoked paprika that is authentic Spain’s most valued spice after saffron is also grown and exported from Extremadura.
The Extremadura area also produces exquisite honeys, including the unique black honey from the dehesa and a new wave of wines produced on a small scale under low-tech conditions, respecting both the land and the environment.
